TESTING AND TRAINING

Mac returned to Dunbarron Castle after completing his leave and he reported to Major Webber at the Base Security Office.

The Major spotted Mac as he approached and rose from his chair to greet him.

“Good to see you Captain,” said Webber, “You’re looking well. How did the vacation go?”

“Just great, Sir,” said Mac, “I had some of the best trout fishing, did a bit of touring, and I really relaxed.”

“Splendid,” replied the Major as he removed his hat from a nearby table. “Let’s head down to see our good doctors, Tanner and Leach. They have planned some entertainment for you, which should be interesting.”

“I have the feeling I’ll be the one whose doing the entertaining,” replied Mac, and they both laughed.

Doctor Tanner was in a discussion with Sally as the officers entered the lab and Mac’s heart beat faster as he focused on her. To him, she was lovely beyond description, and he wanted her badly.

Greetings were exchanged, and Dr. Tanner explained the series of tests he and Sally had prepared for Mac.

“First, we will test your general health and compare it with data we have on file, Captain. That will be our baseline for comparison. We will then proceed with tests of mental ability, strength, and so forth. We will test you in your normal form first, and then run parallel tests with you in your crystalline form. I say crystalline form, since that is what it looks like, but we will check into that as we go.” Doctor Tanner noticed that Sally had already started a body scanner and he smiled at Mackenzie. “Let’s get started, Captain, we have a lot to do.”

Mac’s clinical tests had been scheduled over a two-week period and his general health checked out normal when compared to former data on him. There were no changes to his mental abilities, either in his normal form, or in his crystalline form.

The doctors tested his crystalline structure and determined that it was almost indestructible. The material was impervious to heat, cold, acids and heavy impacts. It was non-conductive to all forms of electrical energy.

Bullets had no effect on the super dense material, and it was suspected that heavier armament would not penetrate it, but that obviously could not be attempted. Test samples of the crystalline structure had been impossible to remove from Mac’s body, and all experiments had to be done with extreme caution and meticulous planning.

Doctors, Leach and Tanner were amazed to find that all types of radiation had little or no effect on the structure. Gamma rays and neutron radiation were both stopped within a millimeter of the material’s outer surface. “If only we could synthesize this stuff,” said Sally as she and Tanner analyzed a test result, “we would have the perfect coating for spacecraft!”

Dr. Tanner, thought, that the list of uses for the material would be long indeed; a veritable boon for mankind.

During Mac’s testing, the doctors discovered the most amazing fact of all relating to his crystal structure.
